ANC STATEMENT ON SRB-VBS REPORT

For Immediate Release
10 October 2018

STATEMENT OF THE ANC ON THE SARB - VBS REPORT

The African National Congress notes and welcomes the report commissioned by South African Reserve Bank titled “The Great Bank Heist” detailing the affairs of VBS Mutual Bank.
The report points towards grave abuse of authority and office as well as worrying instances of corruption.
The ANC’s concern has always been about the thousands of pensioners and individuals who depend on this bank, as well as institutions of state who deposited funds from their budgets, earmarked for much needed infrastructure and services.
On 13 April 2018, and consequent upon the initial findings of the curator which revealed massive losses in VBS, the South African Reserve Bank, Prudential Authority, established in terms of the newly promulgated Financial Sector Regulation; appointed legal entities for the purposes of conducting an investigation into the affairs of VBS.
The investigation was to, amongst others, establish whether or not any of the business of the VBS was conducted with the intent to defraud depositors or other creditors of the bank and whether there had been any irregular conduct by VBS shareholders, directors, executive management, staff, stakeholders and/or related parties.
The “Great Bank Heist” report is alarming and highlights the roles of a range of individuals and institutions in these heinous events.
The ANC led Government championed and led the process towards the establishment of the Prudential Authority within the SARB, which is now expected to act decisively and with the necessary speed to process recommendations from this report.
The ANC maintains that where there have been wrongdoing by individuals and institutions, heads must roll, and the law must take its cause without fear or favour. The manner in which authorities process this report, will be an important indication on our nations commitment to renewal and ethical leadership.

STATEMENT OF THE ANC NATIONAL WORKING COMMITTEE ON THE CLOSURE OF VBS MUTUAL BANK

The African National Congress National Working Committee today, Monday the 15th of October 2018 at its regular sitting discussed the dire situation that has faced citizens (Pensioners, individual depositors and residents of affected municipalities) of our country in view of the closure of VBS Mutual bank.

The NWC has studied the report commissioned by the South African Reserve Bank prudential authority, and has since referred the report in respect of its members to its Integrity Commission to expeditiously attend to the matter

The ANC NWC noted the work done by the National Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to examine all the illegal actions undertaken by various municipalities who acted against the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and made deposit to a mutual bank.

The ANC NWC urges law enforcement agencies to act speedily and with precision including following up on illegal actions by of any entity or individuals.

Earlier today National Officials met with the Officials of Limpopo, to discuss the response of the province to the serious allegations raised in the report and to further notify them of the immediate steps that the organization will be undertaking.

The ANC NWC echoed the same sentiments with the ANC leadership of Limpopo that where there have been wrong doing by individuals and institutions, heads must roll, and the law must take its cause without fear or favor.

The manner, in which authorities process this report, will be an important indication on our nations commitment to renewal and ethical leadership.

ANC REACTION PIK BOTHA'S PASSING

For Immediate release
12 October 2018

ANC SADDENED BY THE PASSING OF PIK BOTHA

The African National Congress expresses it’s condolences to the family and friends of Pik Botha, who passed away on Thursday, 11 October 2018, at the age of 86.

The ANC viewed Botha as one of the few from the erstwhile Nationalist Party (NP) who recognized at an early stage that apartheid was a wrong and crime against humanity.
As the former Nationalist Party Foreign Affairs Minister in a moment of excitement he predicted a black president of the Republic of South Africa in the near future.

In the early days of our democracy, the ANC reached out to former apartheid ‘verligtes’ (the doves) like Botha, within the context of building a new South Africa and offered him a role in the Government of National unity.

While some of the apartheid architects continued to undermine the gains of democracy post-1994 by fueling racial tensions, as a part of his new-found enlightenment Botha joined the African National Congress in Tshwane early 2000.

As the ANC, although Botha was former Minister of the Nationalist Party administration , we acknowledge and are appreciative of his positive contribution towards building a new and better South Africa.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE

ANC statement on the Pretoria high court decision.

ANC WELCOMES THE PRETORIA HIGH COURT JUDGEMENT ON THE FAILED ATTEMPT TO NULLIFYING 54th ELECTIVE CONFERENCE

The African National Congress welcomes the Pretoria High Court judgement on the failed attempt to nullify the 54th National Elective Conference.

The attempts by a businessman from KwaZulu-Natal for the court to set aside the election of the ANC’s top six leaders would have had huge ramifications for our Constitution and the functionality of the organisation in its entirety.

We note and applaud court's decision to dismiss this frivolous attempt seeking to damage the ANC reputation.

The ANC is equally pleased that the court has ordered the applicant to pay the legal costs of the case.

Yesterday's judgement sends a strong message to the members who believe that the courts are the only way to resolve internal matters of the movement.

The ANC is of the view that if the actions of members are left unattended, they will create a chaotic precedent that could paralyse the democratic processes within our organisation. The ANC calls on its members to desist from this practise.

ANC statement on International Mental Health day

For Immediate Release
10 October 2018

ANC OBSERVES INTERNATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH DAY

The African National Congress joins the world in its observation of International Mental Health Day.
In 1893, French sociologist, Emile Durkheim warned of the concept of ‘anomie’. Essentially anomie is because of rapid industrialisation of capitalist society, people become alienated from one another. As people in a society we need each other, we require social solidarity to thrive. With the advent of the fall of the Soviet Union, the centred-ness of globalisation, and the advent of the technological revolution, especially the realm of virtual reality and social media, people have become increasingly alienated from one another- disconnected from their communities.
Enormous economic challenges have grown, with greater pressures to get gainful employment in a rapidly shrinking labour market, limited income generation opportunities, -the young and the old feel the pressures, strains, and stresses of post-modern society.
As such the ANC recognise the burdens of mental strain our people feel today. We also acknowledge that occurrences like the Life Esidemeni should never occur again. As we sort out As South Africans, we have always been able to come together to overcome local, national and global challenges. Today as we confront the growing rates of suicide and occurrences of depression and nervous breakdowns, as much as our government must play its role, the ANC also calls on communities to express community solidarity with each other. We must activate community value system that promotes humanity and Ubuntu.
