17 Aug MPs blur lines between party politics & responsibilities in parliament: Analysts
On the Forum@8 this morning, we discuss the rules for members of Parliament. This is after recent events of ANC Members of Parliament boycotting a parliamentary committee, because it is chaired by Dr Makhosi Khoza. These committees are where the real work is done. How MP's fare in attendance can have an impact on the committees effectiveness. We look at what sanctions are meted out (if at all) when MP's are a no show, who don't abide by the rules of parliament, do not comply in declaring gifts and financial interests, among others. Last year, the deadline for submission of annual disclosure had to be extended, after 55 MP's could not submit their information on time. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Public Service Accountability Monitor's Zukiswa Kota; Wits University's Professor Daryl Glaser and social commentator, Jacob Molapisi.
