#PODCAST: Selvun Moonsamy recalls the life of his mother Ellammah - who participated in the 1956 Union Buildings march

By Newsbreak Producer Rachel Vadi - National Women's Day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The peaceful march was to petition against the country's pass laws that required South Africans defined as "black" under The Population Registration Act, to carry an internal passport. One of the women who participated in that very march was Ellammah Moonsamy, wife of trade unionist - Panyan Moonsamy Harry. Ellammah was 40 years old in 1956 and went on to have a long history of being politically active since her marriage.
