Government has paid 95 million rand for the deployment of more than two thousand soldiers to support the fight against Covid-19 from 29 December last year to the end of this month. This was confirmed in a letter by President Cyril Ramaphosa to Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Defence. The soldiers were deployed mostly in the Western Cape after the President announced a return to Lockdown Level 3 following a surge in new infections in the country's second wave of the pandemic. The SANDF was also deployed in March, April and June last year. Committee chairperson Cyril Xaba says the soldiers have contributed greatly to the fight against Covid-19 by monitoring lockdown regulations.
