EP52: 2020 IN REVIEW - HERE'S LOOKING AT YOUR KID!

Wow. What a year it’s been. We’ve have had it all. Just like Mogie and Macall. Of course those words don’t sound right but just you try saying Bogie and Bacall with a mask on.
Three other significant words repeatedly came to the fore during 2020.
• Passion
• People
• Purpose
And our 50 guests on The Doc and The Guru Podcast have added insight and substance to all three over the course of the year.

If you’re missing all the things we did then just tune in to The Doc and The Guru Podcast and relieve the highlights of 2020.
https://echocast.radio/podcast/the-doc-and-guru-on-all-things-marketing-media/

In 2020 we set out on a journey to showcase local marketing and media issues to the industry. To those who have tuned in this year and to Nfinity Media thank you for your outstanding support.

What about 2021? Sufficient unto the day is the evil, or the blessing thereof, depending on your perspective. Or how much wine you’ve had.

So, for now, let’s just enjoy the break

In 2021, as long as we keep talking to each other and listening, we can find it once again. I know. Just like they did in Key Largo.

EP49: Black Friday and the Elegance of One: The Advertising Regulatory Board.

Acclaimed South African author Angela Makholwa describes the latest novel (Two Months) from Gail Schimmel as a “psychological thriller questioning every angle of reality”. Which is exactly why we invited Gail Schimmel CEO – of the Advertising Regulatory Board – to talk to The Doc and The Guru about Black Friday and self-regulation in advertising.

Is Black Friday just another bit of opportunistic retail smoke and mirrors trick, which distorts pricing reality, or its it the single biggest opportunity we have to kickstart the ailing South African market in 2020?

Today, 50-60% of the world’s countries run Black Friday sales events and the levels of excitement and participation vary from one country to another. @Nielsen analyses The Price of Promoting confirms South Africa is the second-most price sensitive country in the world and @GeoPoll reports that the number of consumers claiming to shop Black Friday increased from 60% in 2017 to 76% in 2019.

Are South African consumers at risk?

Which? Report_2018 highlights endemic and widespread malpractice in “anchor pricing” in Black Friday and Cyber Monday offerrings. What should we be doing to protect our interests if we feel Black Friday advertising is misleading? Will the ARB listen if I am the lone voice in the wilderness? Listen in as Gail Schimmel explains the elegant logic of one.
So here it is folks. This weeks The Doc and The Guru exclusive Black Friday offer.

Listen and subscribe FREE.

Basically the same as last week’s offer.

EP47: 702 Walking the Talk Together

From its early days as a music station 40 years ago, 702 became the defining voice of Gauteng. It’s pantheon of voices include Paddy O’Byrne, John Robbie, Berksie, the late great Cocky “Two-Bull” Tlhotlhalemaje and Stan “I’m not late but I’m still great” Katz.

Stan the Man once said that “only 5% of our 702 listeners call in. The other 95% have got lives”. But ultimately it has been the very voices of those countless thousands who have called-in over the past four decades, that have defined the station.

In recent years some of those voices stopped resonating with listeners and audiences began to decline. After extensive research Primedia has responded to 702 listeners and, in the words of Bing Crosby they’re gonna …
Accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative and stop messing with mister in-between.

With us on the Doc and Guru podcast this week is 702 Station Manager Thabisile Mbete.

In 2016 Thabisile said she wanted to make an impact by championing editorial independence & integrity on Primedia radio channels. In 2020 she gets to deliver on that vision, as 702 commits to #WalkTheTalk with its listeners.

Listen in to The Doc and The Guru as Thabisile talks about the rebranding of 702 as a positive platform for inspirational change and the relevance of Talk Radio in a social media landscape where anybody and everybody gets to air their opinion whenever they want.
Even bad golfers with a ginger combover.

Founder & Managing Director of Lerato Agency & social media platform #PatOnBrands Thokozani ‘Pat’ Mahlangu talks about using social media to craft brands that people love.
We outline some of the key findings from his recently completed Masters thesis on the Use of Social Media Big Data by South African Retailers to support marketing decisions” and the challenges marketers face in validating the authenticity of the data they get from social media.

And as we gear up for the outcome of the American election and the seasonal retail onslaught which is Black Friday maybe this is a good time to pose the question …

Is truth always stranger than fiction?

EP44: The "Mother" of the Springboks - Annelee Murray

On this week’s episode of The DOC & The GURU, we are so pleased to welcome Annelee Murray, the former Springbok PR Manager and Hollard Sport Industry Personality of the Year Winner. While the Boks were winning on the field, Annelee, in her 20 years with the team, was an integral part of the operations that made it all a successful unit.

Over her stellar career she was involved in 225 Test Matches, went to 5 World Cups (where the Boks won 2), worked with 17 Bok Captains and 7 Bok Coaches – a truly unbelievable and incredible achievement! Thank you so much for all that you have done for your Team and Country!

EP43: Spinning from GP_1431 to Hollywood in a Gusheshe. Ernest Nkosi and Enos Manthata

This week in The Doc and The Guru podcast we tell the uplifting story of a young kid from GP_1431 who is so inspired by watching Mbongeni Ngema’s 1992 movie Sarafina at the local Paragon Theatre in Katlehong that he decides then and there to become a movie director.
25 years later his first movie Thina Sobabili wins the Danny Glover Award at the Pan African Film Festival and is nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy as Best Foreign Language Film in 2015.

In 2016 with his 13-part TV series You Think You Can Spin, featuring the legendary BMW Gusheshe, transforms spinning into South Africa’s Number_1 motor sport. Car spinning has now been officially recognised by the country’s regulatory body Motorsport South Africa (MSA) and endorsed by the World of Motorsport South Africa (WOMZA) and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

His latest 2019 production, the feature-length documentary film An Ordinary People, gives an in-depth account of the sport of spinning and the unique subculture it has created in South Africa.
And all of this entirely self-funded.
How’s that sound for a movie script?
Too far-fetched?
It would be. Except it’s not a movie script. It’s the very real story of how two young South African entrepreneurs Ernest Nkosi and Enos Manthata are carving out their own creative space and their own legacy in the world of Advertising, Movie and TV production.

If you love Mzansi’s uniquely crafted local content, then you can’t miss this one folks.
