Collaboration needed to open up SA beef to new and more profitable markets

The various stakeholders in the beef industry need to work together to open up South African beef to more profitable markets. Supply Chain Executive at Beefmaster Group, Roelie Van Reenen, tells the Business Hour, that the biggest barrier standing in the way of South African Beef on a global level, is access to more markets. At this stage only 5% of the country’s beef supply is being exported to other countries, including on the African continent. Van Reenen says the industry needs to focus on putting systems like traceability in place, something which is wanted by countries that the industry wants to export to. Van Reenen says, the Department of Agriculture, Forest and Fisheries cannot be expected to do this alone.
