Every year on May 31, the world observes World No-Tobacco Day, a global
health campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO). First
established in 1987, this observance aims to shed light on the devastating
health effects of tobacco use and to push for policies that help curb its
consumption.
A Mission to Protect Health and Lives

The primary goals of World No-Tobacco Day are clear:
 To highlight the health risks linked to all forms of tobacco use,
including smoking, vaping, and smokeless tobacco.
 To urge governments to adopt and enforce strong tobacco control
policies.
 To encourage individuals—especially young people—to quit tobacco
and to prevent its uptake in the first place.

Focus of the 2024 Campaign
The theme for World No-Tobacco Day 2024 was Protecting children from
tobacco industry interference. This years focus brought attention to the
many tactics the tobacco industry uses to target youth—such as flavored
products, social media marketing, and celebrity endorsements. The campaign
underscored the urgent need to safeguard children from these influences
and to hold the industry accountable.
Tobacco’s Global Toll
The statistics are staggering:
 Over 8 million people die every year due to tobacco use.
 More than 1 million of these deaths result from exposure to second-
hand smoke.
 The majority of tobacco-related deaths occur in low- and middle-
income countries, where public health protections and access to
cessation support are often limited.
How the World Participates
On May 31, countries around the globe engage in a variety of activities to
mark World No-Tobacco Day, including:
 Public awareness campaigns to educate communities
 School and community-based events to reach youth and families
 Government initiatives, such as launching new regulations or health
programs

 Media broadcasts and social media content focused on the dangers
of tobacco
 Support services for those who want to quit, often expanded or
promoted during this time
World No-Tobacco Day serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing struggle
against tobacco addiction and the importance of protecting future
generations from its harms.
