As South Africa joins the global observance of the International Day for the
Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children, the Gauteng Provincial
Legislature (GPL) is calling on communities to take an active role in tackling
Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The annual 16 Days of Activism
for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign runs from 25 November
to 10 December and serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of
GBVF on women, children, and vulnerable groups.
The GPL’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety reaffirmed its
commitment to ending GBVF, highlighting that government intervention alone
is not enough. “Addressing this crisis requires coordinated action across all
sectors of society,” the Committee said.
Call for Stronger Partnerships
The Committee urged citizens, civil society, community structures, and

government to collaborate on long-term prevention programs that tackle the
root causes of GBVF. These initiatives should focus on dismantling harmful
societal norms, improving early intervention mechanisms, and strengthening
community-based support systems to prevent violence before it occurs.
Gun-Free Gauteng
The use of firearms in GBV incidents remains a significant concern. The
Committee continues to advocate for a Gun-Free Gauteng, calling for stricter
gun-control measures and stronger enforcement of existing firearm regulations
to reduce fatalities linked to domestic and gender-based violence.
Community Action Saves Lives
During this period of reflection and activism, the Committee emphasized the
critical role communities play in supporting law enforcement and the justice
system. Citizens are encouraged to report any known incidents of gender-based
violence—whether involving a neighbour, family member, friend, or colleague.
Silence only enables perpetrators, while reporting can save lives.
