IN CONVERSATION WITH ZWONAKA

From the heart of Johannesburg, South Africa, Zwonaka is quickly emerging
as one of the most promising young voices in indie music. At just 20 years
old, the multi-talented singer-songwriter and producer has been turning
heads with his emotionally charged music, intricate production, and DIY
creative approach.

Zwonaka began producing music in his bedroom on his mother’s laptop,
inspired by the ambition to one day be mentioned alongside artists such as
Sufjan Stevens, Frank Ocean, Lauv, Tyla, and Lizzy McAlpine. His music
emphasizes intimate transparency, both in lyrics and in production, drawing
comparisons to the meticulous soundscapes of Finneas and Sampha.
Since first releasing music in 2019, Zwonaka has steadily built an audience of
over 20,000 listeners, reaching fans across indie and alternative music
scenes, fashion enthusiasts, and niche social media communities like film and
self-help circles. His music spans both deeply personal songwriting and
sophisticated production, exemplifying the modern “indie musician” who is
as hands-on with mastering and music videos as with writing and performing.
His debut album, i remember where i came from because i can’t forget,
released in August 2025, showcases this blend of introspection and technical
skill. Tracks like “i hate you but i could never hate you,” “Olivia,” and “New
York” highlight his ability to create music that is both relatable and sonically
intricate. Earlier projects, including the album Sightseeing and several singles,
laid the foundation for his growing reputation in the indie scene.
Zwonaka is also embracing the tools of the modern musician: integrating AI
plugins into his production, experimenting with TikTok content, and applying
dynamic social media strategies to connect with his audience. His approach
reflects a new era of independent artistry where creators control every
aspect of their work while staying deeply connected to their fans.
Currently pursuing formal music education at Berklee College of Music,
Zwonaka continues to refine his craft and expand his creative horizons. His
journey is emblematic of a generation of artists redefining what it means to
succeed independently in the music industry — combining technical skill,
emotional honesty, and entrepreneurial drive.
With his blend of vulnerability, ingenuity, and ambition, Zwonaka is not just
making music; he’s shaping the future of indie artistry, one meticulously
crafted track at a time.
