In this special episode of Divine APPOINTMENTS, host Amanda Loftus sits down with the legendary Pastor Nevil Norden of Lewende Woord. As the ministry celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026, we take an intimate look at the legacy of a man whose compassion, humility, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel have shaped generations.

Episode Overview
The conversation serves as a retrospective on Pastor Norden’s life and six decades of ministry. We explore the specific encounters and spiritual milestones that defined his path—from his early days as a schoolboy leader to his foundational role in establishing Lewende Woord as a cornerstone of Christian ministry in South Africa.

Key Biographical and Spiritual Milestones
A Lifelong Commitment: Pastor Norden shares the story of his conversion on 16 July 1961, a decision that set the trajectory for over sixty years of ministry.

The "Weeping Prophet": Discover the origins of his affectionate title, earned through his deep empathy and passion for winning souls—a passion that remains as strong today as it was in his youth.

The Call to Ministry: We discuss his early leadership in the Christian Student Body and the initiatives he launched, such as “Sport vir Christus & Atlete,” which aimed to reach students with the message of Jesus.

Faith and Discipline: Pastor Norden reflects on his early adulthood, where he balanced his spiritual growth with competitive bodybuilding, eventually winning the title of Mr Republic of South Africa in 1972.

Building a Legacy
Founding Lewende Woord: On 2 February 1986, Pastor Norden founded Lewende Woord. His vision was never to build a vast corporate empire, but rather to train and equip others; encouraging those called to church planting to do so freely.

Global Reach: From humble beginnings—growing a small congregation at the Durban Christian Centre from 6 to 169 members in just nine months—the ministry has flourished, with influence now extending to Madagascar and Mauritius.

Passing the Torch: After decades of service, the leadership of Lewende Woord Pretoria transitioned to his son, Markus Norden, five years ago, ensuring the continuity of the ministry’s heart and mission.

Join us for this powerful reflection on a life marked by devotion, compassion, and a relentless commitment to sharing the Gospel.
