On 14 July 2026, residents from Riverpark Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase
3, K206, Extension 9 and the Mahauzana Flats in Alexandra
submitted a Memorandum of Demands to City Power following a
peaceful march to the Alexandra Service Delivery Centre. The
memorandum raised concerns regarding the electrification of the
Mahauzana Flats, the upgrading of electricity infrastructure, improved
responsiveness from City Power, and urgent intervention to address
unsafe electrical infrastructure in the area.
In response, City Power acknowledged receipt of the memorandum
and reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with affected communities
while respecting residents’ constitutional right to peaceful protest. The
utility noted that the Mahauzana Flats are currently unlawfully
occupied and that occupants are not registered City Power customers.
According to City Power, the area is characterised by widespread
illegal electricity and water connections, resulting in significant
electricity theft and non-payment for municipal services.
