In Conversation With Paula Phukuje- Employment and Labour Law Attorney

Employment law affects almost every South African, whether you’re signing your first employment contract, facing disciplinary action, managing a workplace, or simply trying to understand your rights at work. Yet many employees and employers only seek legal advice once a dispute has already reached the CCMA or Labour Court.
Joining us is Paula Phukuje, an Employment and Labour Law Attorney and Specialist at Fairbridges Attorneys, a member of TerraLex, an international legal network. Paula advises both South African and international clients on a broad range of workplace matters, including employment contracts, disciplinary hearings, retrenchments, incapacity processes, workplace policies and labour law compliance.
She has represented clients before the CCMA, Bargaining Councils and the Labour Court, while also working with businesses to prevent disputes before they arise. Beyond legal practice, Paula is passionate about educating both employers and employees on their rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
Her expertise comes at a particularly relevant time. South Africa’s labour market is changing rapidly as employers grapple with economic uncertainty, technological change, evolving workplace expectations and ongoing debates around migration and employment. Recent reports suggest that changing migration patterns could reshape parts of the labour market, raising important legal questions for employers and employees alike.
This morning, we’ll get to know Paula, unpack some of the biggest labour law misconceptions, and explore what today’s workplace looks like from a legal perspective.
