A civil rights group says it believes the current number of police officers who are unfit and untrained to carry guns is just the tip of the iceberg.
Afriforum says an internal report it obtained shows that in 2012 the number of officers who were unfit to carry firearms stood at 17 percent, with the Eastern Cape leading at 47 percent.
The organisation's Ian Cameron says they believe the situation has become worse and they have thus submitted a request to the South African Police Service to have the latest figures made public.
Cameron says there is likely a relationship between police firearm competency, the number of police killings and botched criminal cases.
The police's national spokesperson Vish Naidoo says the report was not meant to be seen by the public and was only meant for Parliament.
