Afrikaans the target for protesting Tuks students

Afrikaans is the target for University of Pretoria students.

The University's Hatfield and Groenkloof campuses were closed yesterday after violent protests erupted on Thursday over the university's language policy. Vice Chancellor Cheryl de la Rey said the campuses will remain closed until the institution can ensure the safety of its students and staff.

Scuffles broke out between students on Thursday during a meeting attended by AfriForum Youth, the Progressive Youth Alliance and the EFF Student Command on the language policy. Security guards and police tried to separate the groups.

Twenty-seven students have since been arrested and will appear in court on Monday.

PASMA, the student formation of the PAC, says the root cause of racism in South Africa and not just the University - is the dominance and superiority that Afrikaners enjoy.
