By-elections across the country put on ice

Municipal by-elections that would have taken place across the country today have been postponed.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) at the last minute postponed by-elections due to take place in North West, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopop and the Western Cape.

This after the by-elections in six wards in Tlokwe, North West, were postponed for six weeks yesterday due to discrepancies with the voter's roll.

Independent candidates yesterday successfully applied in the Electoral Court to have the by-elections in Potchefstroom postponed because the IEC could not provide addresses for all registered voters in the different wards.

The IEC said in a statement the postponement was in the interest of free and fair elections, adding that all by-elections share similar circumstances as those ordered for a postponement by the court.

DA Member of Parliament, Chris Hattingh says this will have massive implications for the IEC and the country.
