NWU Mafikeng hostel students housed in Civic Centre overnight

The North West University (NWU) arranged alternative accommodation last night for students staying at the Mafikeng campus after two buildings were set alight on Wednesday night.

NWU Rector, Dan Kgwadi, says the university had to ensure students' safety.

Two buildings, a car and motorcycle were set alight last night following sporadic clashes between students and security during the day.

The clashes started after students, allegedly belonging to the EFF student command and supporters of the dissolved Student Representative Council, disrupted management’s inauguration event for twelve newly-appointed SRC members yesterday.

Kgwadi says students from residences were housed at the town’s Civic Centre overnight.

Kgwadi could not say when the Mafikeng campus would reopen.
