A student organisation says closing the Mafikeng campus of the North West University (NWU) was an unnecessary move which will have an adverse affect on students' academic performance.

Dingaan Lorathu, Sasco branch secretary at the Mafikeng campus, says despite two buildings being set alight on Wednesday, students could still have stayed on in their residences and continued with their studies.

Lorathu also expressed doubt that it was students who committed the act.
