NPA welcomes judgment denying Pistorius leave to appeal murder conviction

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the Constitutional Court judgment denying former paralympian Oscar Pistorius leave to appeal his murder conviction.

Spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku says the NPA has always maintained that the application for leave to appeal was entirely without merit.

The Constitutional Court was Pistorius' last resort to stay out of jail for the 2013 killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. He will now have to return to the high court in Pretoria on April 18 for sentencing.

The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years, unless Pistorius can provide reasons to deviate from this prescribed sentence.

Pistorius is currently out on bail of R10 000.
