The North West University (NWU) has confirmed allegations by students that live ammunition was used during clashes on its Mafikeng campus during a student protest last month.
Management of the university said in a statement a case of attempted murder has been opened and is now being investigated by the South African Police Service.
On 24 February two buildings were set alight and rocks flung at security personnel at the Mafikeng campus, after students protested the appointment of a new Student Representative Council. The old council had been disbanded due to its members’ alleged involvement in illegal protests.
Campus spokesperson Koos Degenaar says the university is giving the police their full support and cooperation with the investigation.
