Two teenage girls have drowned and a teenage boy is missing after a group of pupils on a school outing struggled in the surf at Margate Beach on Saturday evening.
A group of Pietermaritzburg school pupils accompanied by teachers and their principal were at the beach on a school outing when a group of children appeared to get into difficulties while swimming.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said this incident occurred after the lifeguards had ended their duty, but off-duty lifeguards and members of the public rushed to their assistance.
The 17-year-old boy boy was seen floating face down in the water and is presumed to have drowned.
Lambinon has once more cautioned the public about swimming at beaches where life-guards are off-duty.
