Hawks deny police members involved in Welkom heist

Five suspects that were arrested yesterday in connection with a foiled robbery near Welkom were not police officers.
Hawks spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi, says the suspects aged between 33 and 48 were arrested after the Hawks received information that an armed robbery was being planned in the area.
He says two vehicles that the suspects were using were spotted on the R34 at Riebeeckstad. A chase ensued and officers indicated to the suspects to stop. A shootout followed after the suspects refused to pull over.
Mulaudzi says the suspect in one of the vehicles lost control and crashed.
He says the suspects are expected to appear in the local Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
