Nkandla judgment expected this morning

The Constitutional Court is expected to zoom in on the powers of the Public Protector when it delivers judgment in the Nkandla matter this morning.

Two years ago Thuli Madonsela recommended that president Jacob Zuma pay back some of the money spent on his private homestead. She found he unduly benefited from some of the R246-million upgrades.

But as Maryke Vermaak reports, Zuma wasn’t initially prepared to repay any of the money.

The EFF and the DA want the court to find that Zuma breached the constitution by failing to heed Madonsela’s directive. Zuma last month submitted a settlement proposal offering to repay a portion of the funds spent.
