Marikana Support Campaign in PTA ahead of Phiyega inquiry

The Marikana Support Campaign is in Pretoria ahead of the start of the board of inquiry into allegations of misconduct by suspended National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega. President Jacob Zuma established the board following a recommendation by the Farlam Commission of Inquiry which saw Zuma suspending Phiyega in October over allegations of misconduct. The Farlam commission - which investigated the deaths of 44 people during strike-related unrest in Marikana, Rustenburg, in August 2012 — recommended that Phiyega face an inquiry into her fitness to hold office. The Marikana Support Campaign's Rehad Desai says Phiyega must be brought to justice for her role in the massacre.

The hearing is expected to run until June 10. The board has been tasked with establishing whether Phiyega and senior police officers under her leadership misled the Farlam commission.
