The Department of Water and Sanitation is appealing to communities in the Moqhaka Municipality in Kroonstad to clean the containers they use to collect water from tankers to avoid the spread of waterborne diseases, amid a total shutdown.

The department’s spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau's comments come as the municipality, which consists of among others Kroonstad, Steynsrus, Vierfontein and Viljoenskroon, is experiencing a total water shutdown.

Ratau says the shutdown started on Wednesday as the Department of Water and Sanitation cleans reservoirs.
