Struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada will be laid to rest at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg today.
A spokesperson for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Neesham Balton, says proceedings start at 10:00 with a political tribute session organised by the Foundation. Former President and Foundation Board member, Kgalema Motlanthe, will speak at the event. Other speakers include anti-apartheid struggle stalwart Sophie Williams-de Bruyn, a former Robben Island prisoner, and a family member.
Balton says there will also be brief tributes from representatives of political parties and organisations.
Balton says President Jacob Zuma will not form part of today's funeral programme. Kathrada was critical of Zuma in recent times, and wrote an open letter to him in 2016 calling on him to resign.
The Presidency said Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the official state funeral - a separate event from today's funeral.
