Rain predicted for dry parts of NC later this year

Large parts of the Northern Cape that are still gripped by drought will not necessarily be the hardest hit when expected El Nino conditions return to the country.

This comes after the South African Weather Service said early warning signs show that South Africa could be hit by the climate cycle again.

Scientist and meteorologist at the Weather Service, Cobus Olivier, says some parts of the Northern Cape fall in the winter rainfall area and are thus only due to receive rain later this year anyway. He said although El Nino conditions are often associated with very dry conditions and a scarcity of water, the impact could be far less than the devastating drought that has gripped the country over the past two years. Several provinces – including Northern Cape, Free State and North West - have been declared disaster areas.

Olivier says if significant rains fall in the winter the El Nino conditions will be less harsh.
