ANC united despite fallout over Zuma Cabinet reshuffle

The ANC says what appear to be leaked notes from the National Working Committee meeting are not official and do not represent the views of the party. The documents were sent to the media last night via the party's communication officials. The minutes, which show that the majority of ANC members support President Jacob Zuma, revealed that the ANC's top officials discussed a change in leadership. Zuma's recent Cabinet reshuffle and the fallout from sacking Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan topped the agenda. The ANC however sent out a statement saying the notes had been sent out erroneously. The party is expected to brief the media this morning, where it will provide the official version of what happened at the meeting. It is also expected to react to calls by its alliance partners, the SACP and Cosatu, for Zuma to step down. ANC spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa said the party would emerge from the meeting united.

Meanwhile ANC veterans have warned Zuma that he is nothing more than a party official elected to serve the South African people. They briefed the media in Johannesburg amid mounting pressure by civil society, opposition parties and the tripartite alliance for Zuma to step down. The stalwarts, who include Mary Metcalfe, reverend Frank Chikane and Cheryl Carolus, warned Zuma that he is not untouchable, as Maryke Vermaak reports.
