Earthlife Africa welcomes nuclear deal court judgment

Environmental NGO, Earthlife Africa is celebrating a court judgment that set aside government's controversial nuclear deal.
The Western Cape High Court on Wednesday morning ruled that government's decision to call for proposals for the procurement of 9.6 gigawatts of nuclear energy is unlawful and unconstitutional.
Earthlife Africa - together with The Southern African Faith Communities' Environment Institute - launched the court challenge in October 2015. They argued that a secret deal had already been struck with Russia. That deal would commit Eskom to pushing ahead with the nuclear program despite objections, and ensure that a Russian company gets the contract.
Earthlife's Muna Lakhani says they are still studying the judgment, but an initial reading suggests they have succeeded in every aspect of their application.
