FS govt calls for meeting of alliance partners following Workers Day rally

The Free State government has called for an urgent meeting of the alliance partners following the cancellation of Cosatu's May Day rally in Bloemfontein on Monday, after President Jacob Zuma was prevented from delivering the keynote address.

The crowd sang anti-Zuma songs, which escalated when the president arrived at Loch Logan Park. A scuffle also broke out between Zuma supporters and detractors, with some Cosatu members carrying knobkerries and sjamboks, calling on him to go. In an unprecedented move, after several failed attempts by provincial leaders to calm the crowd, Cosatu announced an end to the event with no speeches delivered.

Free State MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mathabo Leeto says this is a call to all government and federation leaders to take responsibility for the divisions that exist, and urgently address underlying issues that led to certain groups of their members disrupting the rally.
