Between 7 000 and 9 000 people have been evacuated from various areas in Knysna as fires continue to ravage the area.

It's understood that around 50 homes were destroyed but that number is yet to be confirmed. The fire is a direct result of the massive storm that hit the Cape yesterday.

Fire Chief for the Eden District, Clinton Manuel says the fire is still not under control as the wind is hampering their efforts.

A farm worker, his wife and their son died have died in the blaze while another person reportedly died of a heart attack.
