Municipal workers union, Samwu has agreed with the DA in the Free State that the Mayor of the Mangaung Metro, Olly Mlamleli, backtracked on an agreement reached with striking Samwu workers on Tuesday.
Bloemfontein's historic City Hall was burned to the ground on Wednesday night, allegedly by disgruntled Samwu members. Tjaart van der Walt, DA Ward Councillor in Mangaung, says the fire was started after the Mayor of the Mangaung Metro, Olly Mlamleli, backtracked on an agreement reached with striking Samwu workers on Tuesday. The union has denied that their members were responsible for the fire.
Samwu's provincial secretary, Thabang Tseuoa, says union members were not protesting yesterday, they were assembled near City Hall to receive feedback from Samwu leadership regarding the outcome of a meeting with the Manguang Metro in which labour issues were discussed on Tuesday.
