'2019 elections are not a destination' - Numsa

The National Union of Metalworkers South Africa (Numsa) is expected to announce whether it will contest the 2019 elections or not at the launching congress of the union’s political party soon. This as the Independent Electorate Commission (IEC) greenlit the union, to register the Socialist Revolutionary Workers’ Party (SRWP) this week. The IEC had initially denied the union’s application to do so back in July over issues it had with the logo and the proposed name. Member of the National Working Committee of the SRWP and Numsa spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, says they did not agree with the IEC’s assertion that their logo was similar to that of the South African Communist Party (SACP). They maintained that there was no relationship between the logos and as a result appealed the decision. Earlier this week, Numsa General Secretary, Irvin Jim, questioned the electorate’s decision to stall the party. Hlubi-Majola says they found out the IEC had accepted their appeal and decided to register the SWRP officially on Friday, November 2.
