Today marks exactly 25 years since South Africa held its first post-apartheid elections in 1994. With less than two weeks to the May 8, dubbed by many as the first highly contested elections since the country’s first non-racial democratic elections 25 years ago, questions are mounting as to how free the country really is when millions of South Africans are still living in dire poverty, battling to access basic necessities such as water and adequate sanitation.
