Edcon files to retrench more than 22,000 people as retailers struggle during covid 19 pandemic

Retail giant, Edcon, has served 22 000 of its employees with notices of retrenchment. The group which owns among other Edgars and Jet has come forward claiming that the company’s financial position has recently become distressed due to poor sales and the recession in the country’s economy. It says it was exacerbated by frequent load-shedding which disrupted purchasing patterns. Earlier this year Edcon went into business rescue after losing two-billion-rand in sales.
