Tribute to Shaykh Seraj Hendricks by Dr Hisham Hellyer

--:--
World renowned scholar of Islam Shaykh Seraj Hassan Hendricks of the Azzawia institute was laid to rest at Mowbray cemetery this morning, in what was a sombre and quiet burial with just close family. The learned scholar contacted covid-19 about a month ago and succumbed to the virus yesterday. He is an intellectual of note, recognised internationally for his unique insight into Islam. As a spiritual figure in Cape Town, he has had hundreds of students sitting on his feet in the fields of Sharia, Arabic, tassawuf and other fields.

As we continue with our tribute to our beloved Shaykh Seraj Hendricks we chat to Shaykh Dr Hisham A. Hellyer, a British scholar of English and Egyptian extraction, was a student of al-marhum Shaykh Seraj Hendricks.

Shaykh Hisham was appointed as Azzawia Institute senior scholar by Shaykh Seraj Hendricks, with whom he co-wrote a book on the tariqa of the scholars of Makka, entitled 'A Sublime Way: the Sufi Path of the Sages of Makka.
Dr Hisham was also appointed as professorial fellow of Cambridge by Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad, senior associate fellow at the Royal Institute in London and the Carnegie Endowment in Washington.

Dr Hellyer now joins us on line.
