ANALYSIS: Unpacking Mpho Phalatse being ousted as Mayor of Johannesburg.

Mpho Phalatse voted out as Johannesburg mayor for second time

She was voted out during a council meeting on Thursday, where 140 councillors voted for her ousting, while 129 councillors voted against the motion to remove her.

Her removal shines a spotlight on the instability of coalition governments, which political pundits say are more about staying in power than addressing service delivery needs. This was not the first attempt to have Phalatse removed as the first citizen of SA’s largest metro and economic hub.

ACTION SA says the DA has neglected Mpho Phalatse ahead of tomorrow’s vote.

ACTION SA says the DA has neglected Mpho Phalatse ahead of tomorrow’s vote of no confidence in the Johannesburg council.

ActionSA, which is a DA coalition partner, has called out the DA for “abandoning Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse and the residents of Joburg”.

Phalatse is facing three motions of no confidence at the city of Johannesburg council sitting on Thursday. She has slim chances of survival after a fallout between the DA and Patriotic Alliance (PA).

The ANC must understand the risk it faces if it doesn't act on Eskom crisis

All that took place at the #PowerToThePeopleMarch.

‘We don’t have an Eskom problem in South Africa, we have an ANC problem. That is why we have chosen to come and march on their offices and not the Eskom headquarters or the Union buildings,’ said DA leader John Steenhuisen during the party’s march on Luthuli House on Wednesday. The ANC Youth League, meanwhile, mobilised outside the building, accusing the DA of ‘grandstanding’.

DA supporters and members have come out in numbers to march against the rolling blackouts that are causing a huge disruption across the nation.

Build One South Africa (Bosa), the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the metalworkers union Numsa on Monday filed court papers to set aside energy regulator Nersa's approval of Eskom's plan to increase the electricity tariff.
