SA has grossly underperformed other currencies on a year-to-date basis. SA’s risk profile has deteriorated and funds now have greater ability to invest abroad thanks to Reg 28 changes governing pension funds. The combination has clouded the outlook for the ZAR that turned unexpectedly bearish earlier this year. Later this year, some of that underperformance could unwind.
