GUEST – Siphesihle Zwane, portfolio manager at Allan Gray.

The idea of owning property is significant in South Africa – for various reasons – and it is often seen as the safest bet, especially when markets are in turmoil. But owning a stake in a listed property company is very different from investing in a residential property. South African listed property has shifted from being a leading wealth creator in the early 2000s to one of the weakest performers over the past decade on the back of sluggish economic growth, ongoing infrastructure challenges and the impact of COVID-19 on retail and office space demand.

Over the last year, the sector has shown signs of recovery. Is it time to cement the opportunity, or should it be approached with caution? Allan Gray portfolio manager Siphesihle Zwane joins Kaya Biz to discuss the performance of the sector and share some of the considerations long-term investors should keep in mind when exploring opportunities in listed property.
