Mulder is now the South African record holder for the most individual runs in a Test innings — and the fifth-highest score in Test history.
South Africa then bowled Zimbabwe out for 170 to enforce the follow-on.
While the day belonged to Mulder, Prenelan Subrayen also impressed on debut with figures of 4/42.
