Red Ants Resume Evictions in Germiston’s Pharoe Park – Tensions Boil Over

The City of Ekurhuleni has resumed evictions at Pharoe Park in the Germiston CBD, with the controversial Red Ants moving in for a second day. On Tuesday, more than 400 residents were forcefully removed for defaulting on rent and illegally occupying the flats, a move that sparked violent protests, including the torching of a nearby Home Affairs office. Two people have been arrested. Human Settlements MMC Kgopelo Hollo confirmed that one block was left untouched on day one, but Wednesday’s efforts picked up where they left off. The evicted now face uncertainty, some camping outside the complex gate, demanding answers. Inside, the flats stand empty, windows shattered, doors ajar, and belongings strewn across littered courtyards. Govan Whittles, standing in for Phemelo, speaks to MMC Hollo about what happens next and whether dignity can be restored to those left homeless.
