Women for change inspired a strong wave of activism on social media in the past few days, with users across the country and beyond turning their profile pictures purple to stand in solidarity with victims of gender-based violence.
That energy spilled onto the streets of Braamfontein on Monday night, as Wits University students marched after reports that a student was allegedly sexually assaulted on campus by a newly elected SRC member, Musawenkosi Mavuso.
The Wits SRC has since released a series of statements condemning the incident and supporting the student movements, while also confirming that they have distanced themselves from the accused, who has since been suspended by the university.
The SRC says it will not be giving any media interviews until investigations are complete.
