Illicit and counterfeit goods are no longer a side hustle for criminals they’ve become one of the biggest threats to South Africa’s economy.

We speak to Zinhle Tyikwe, CEO of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA), as the organisation launches Illicit Economy Task Forces, a powerful new alliance bringing together nearly 20 industry bodies to disrupt illegal trade across liquor, tobacco, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, clothing, and even children’s toys.

South Africa loses billions in tax revenue each year to illicit trading money that should be fueling health services, jobs and growth. Meanwhile, counterfeit and unsafe products continue to flood the market, undermining real businesses and putting the public at risk.
