Questions are mounting over the mandate of soldiers deployed in parts of Gauteng. On Wednesday, members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) conducted surprise raids alongside police in Eldorado Park, Riverlea, Westbury and Sophiatown, seizing contraband and making arrests. But confusion remains over whether the operation is aimed at gang violence or illegal mining. The deployment - announced by Cyril Ramaphosa - is set to run until the end of April, yet its full strategy has not been made public. Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, says the president’s announcement referred specifically to illegal mining and is now seeking clarity from Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
