Johannesburg Water left stranded after R3.4bn City sweep

Johannesburg Water was left with zero in its account after the City of Johannesburg withdrew R3.4 billion at the end of June, leaving the utility unable to settle R1.8 billion in debts and forcing several projects and contracts to stall. Although funds were returned from 9 July, concerns remain over the impact on critical infrastructure projects, including repairs to leaking reservoirs.
